Hugel Mound. Building networks and biological fertility.

Allotment Soup

Public workshop with Ecological Designer Vincent Walsh.

WHAT IS A HUGEL MOUND?

Hugel mounds derive from the German word ‘hügelkultur’, the literal translation for a hügel mound is “hill culture”. The design was originally pioneered by Sepp Holzer, a farmer and international consultant for natural agriculture.

HOW WILL IT HELP GROWING?

A Hugel mound is effectively a raised bed, filled with rotten wood and materials that would otherwise go to waste to create a highly fertile soil. A range of different crops can be planted directly into the Hugel mound providing more sustainable growing space, while supporting the site to retain moisture, sequester carbon, aerate the soil, and supply nutrients as the mound decays over the years.

This will be a hands on workshop as we create the layers of compostable materials to make the Hugel mound. See full details at https://www.facebook.com/events/291361188945120/

Dr Vincent Walsh

Dr Walsh has an academic background across moving image design, architecture and biological urban systems. A senior action lead researcher with a comprehensive understanding of circular economy principles, regenerative design, ecological life support systems and integrated food systems. His desktop research is underpinned by substantial practical knowledge of ecological food system and landscapes, including organic orchards, forest gardening, silviculture, agroforestry and technology-based food systems such as integrated, aquaponics, hydroponics and aeroponics.
